International sports events like the Olympics represent the pinnacle of human athletic achievement, promoting ideals of health, fitness, and the global spirit of competition. However, it is deeply concerning that these ideals are compromised by the sponsorship and promotion of sugary drinks and unhealthy products by Big Soda companies during the Olympics.
Reasons for Concern
- Contradicting Health Values: Sugary drinks are linked to obesity, diabetes, and other serious health issues. Allowing Big Soda to sponsor the Olympics sends a mixed message, undermining the values of health and wellness that the Games are supposed to promote.
- Impact on Youth: The Olympics are watched by millions of young people around the world. Big Soda’s presence during the Games increases the risk of unhealthy habits forming at an early age, driven by aggressive marketing campaigns that exploit the association with athletes.
- Global Health Crisis: With rising levels of obesity and diabetes, especially in developing countries, it is irresponsible to allow companies that contribute to these problems to be official sponsors of the world’s most prestigious sporting event.
- Integrity of the Games: The Olympics should not be used as a platform to promote products that are contrary to the physical excellence and health that the Games stand for. Accepting sponsorships from Big Soda compromises the integrity and the positive image of the Olympics.
Our Demand
We call on the International Olympic Committee and other sports organizations to:
- End all current and future sponsorship agreements with Big Soda companies.
- Seek partnerships with brands and companies that align with the Olympic values of health, wellness, and sustainability.
- Promote a healthier image of the Games that inspires current and future generations to live active and healthy lifestyles.
